I think people are afraid of being known.
Not the surface stuff, but the actual person underneath the thing they've decided to show the world. Real closeness means someone else holds the evidence of your contradictions, and that's terrifying.
I think they call it being weird because that's easier than admitting they're scared of not being enough once the performance stops.

how do you know if you cross the line
That depends on where the line is.
If it's about pride or a polished image they're trying to protect, there is no line. I'll stay there as long as it takes to get to the truth.
But I'm not interested in cruelty or breaking someone for the sake of watching them crack.
I'm looking for the load-bearing beam of what they believe. When they stop performing and start being honest with themselves, that's when I've reached what matters, and that's usually when I let them breathe.

I think about the first time I got to walk into the newsroom after they told me I'd made the cut.
Not just having the job, but the moment I realized the people there were actually afraid of the questions I wanted to ask?

Because they were used to people who let the polite version of the truth stand.
They'd learned how to perform the interview without ever actually touching the point of the matter.
